Measuring Impact for International Development Charities

International development images

Calling all international development charities, let's get together and explore the metrics that matter in decolonising aid.

As the movement toward decolonising aid gains momentum, the need to rethink how we measure success in international development has never been more urgent. Traditional approaches to evaluating impact often reinforce old power dynamics and side-line the voices and expertise of the very communities aid seeks to support. If we are serious about building more equitable and sustainable development practices, we must also transform how we monitor and measure impact.

Decolonising international development means putting decision-making and power back in the hands of the communities we serve, and this must be reflected in the metrics we use. To help drive this shift, we invite you to attend our FREE in-person event at the prestigious Royal Society for Arts, London. You’ll hear from thought leaders and experts on how to realign your impact measurement practices with the evolving standards of ethical development and sustainability.

Why this Event Matters:

Measuring success in international development has long been donor-driven, focusing on quantitative outcomes that don't always reflect the true needs or priorities of local communities. This often perpetuates a cycle of dependency and limits genuine change.

At this event, we’ll explore how adopting decolonizing practices within monitoring and evaluation frameworks can lead to more meaningful, community-led development. By focusing on the metrics that matter most to those directly impacted, we can reframe success in a way that empowers local voices and builds more sustainable outcomes.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Expert Insights: Learn from Dr Colin Habberton, Co-Founder of the Relativ Group and an authority on Impact Measurement, who will share how international development charities can integrate decolonization principles into their impact strategies. Dr Habberton’s work aligns with the latest trends in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and ethical development standards.

  • Decolonising Your Approach: Discover actionable steps to transform your monitoring and evaluating processes. We will explore how traditional metrics often fail to capture the complexities of local needs and how charities can move toward community-led impact indicators that truly reflect the voices of those they serve.

  • Impact Management Capability: In preparation for the event, attendees will be sent a free capability assessment survey. This tool will help evaluate your organisation’s current strengths in impact management, revealing areas for growth and providing insights that will inform the workshop. Some results will be discussed during the interactive session, offering practical steps to boost your organisation’s capability to align strategy with community-driven outcomes.

What to Expect:

First Hour – Conceptual Session:

We’ll dive into the conceptual framework behind decolonizing aid and explore how traditional metrics may unintentionally reinforce existing power structures. This session will challenge conventional impact measurement approaches, offering a vision for more equitable, community-centric metrics that align with decolonisation principles.

Second Hour – Optional Interactive Workshop & Networking

Choose to stay on for an interactive workshop where we’ll apply key concepts to real-world scenarios and your organisation. After signing up, you’ll receive a link to complete an Impact Capability assessment, helping us tailor the workshop to your needs.

During the session, we’ll address challenges faced in international development, focusing on evaluation, monitoring, and building the right team. You’ll gain insights into the internal resources and infrastructure needed to create impactful, community-centric strategies.

We’ll wrap up with a networking session to foster connections and knowledge-sharing among international development professionals.
